It would be very fair to say that in the history of film making and cinema there’s been many wonderful directors. When you ask someone what Scorsese films have they seen they would most likely say Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino or The Departed. When you say Robert Zemeckis they say Forrest Gump, Castaway or The Back To The Future Trilogy. For Brian De Palma Scarface, the Wachowski’s The Matrix Trilogy, Wes Craven Scream or Nightmare on Elm Street, Kathryn Bigelow Point Break, John Huston The Maltese Falcon, Frank Darabont The Shawshank Redemption. I really could go on and on really.

It’s a shame that people remember a director for very few films and haven’t seen their other works, which to an extent have been forgotten. I have to say this is a real shame really as they are missing out on some fantastic films

I have only seen a handful of Scorsese’s films and I have to say my favourite is The King of Comedy which is a fantastic and scathing satire on celebrity culture. Rupert Pupkin has to be one of De Niro’s best creations. It’s an incredibly and darkly funny film. People usually see Scorsese as a crime thriller director when he’s so much more than that. He’s directed historical, musical, comedy, drama and even a child friendly adventure film. All of which have been highly regarded when they were released. Some of them are The Last Passion of Christ, After Hours, Hugo, The Aviator, The Age of Innocence and New York New York.

Everyone knows Brian De Palma’s crime epic Scarface, people see at his magnum opus and completely forget his other fantastic work like Sisters, Blow Out Dressed To Kill, Body Double and Raising Cain from his Hitchcock period, The Untouchables, Mission Impossible and Phantom of The Paradise. I’m sure I’m forgetting a few somewhere.

I know that this happens all the time and it’s shame that not all that many people look into the Directors back catalogue to find anything interesting. I personally find it a great learning experience as you’ll never know what you’ll discover. I like to see directors diverge into different genres of films like actors do a diverse array of roles the same should be for directors and people give their other pieces of work a chance.
