As we all know now in this day and age most mainstream film posters are Photoshop pieces consisting of photographs of the actors on the poster which being honest looks completely boring and flat in my opinion no matter how good or bad the film is.
The reason being is that the studios find it to expensive to produce painted film posters which I find ridiculous as the big studios pump a lot of money into film marketing with multiple trailers, twitter accounts and so forth.
Though they can get work for lower budget films, cinema re-releases and Blu-Ray releases, Before discovering Arrow Video I only really knew of Drew Struzan. Now I know of artists such as Paul Shipper, Chris Weston, Dan Munford,Gary Pullin, Paul Shipper, Joe Wilson, The Red Dress, Nathaniel Marsh, Jeff Zornow and many more. The effort all these artists put into their pieces is incredible.
Also I’ve recently discovered a book called Film Posters Re-Imagined and I have to say I’m completely besotted by it as I had a look inside and saw some of the artwork in it and it’s incredible. I’ll definitely be getting it.
Unfortunately I missed on the Arrow Cult Book as I would of loved to of gotten it but it was far to expensive, I hope they release a cheaper alternative down the line.
At the end of the day I’m really pleased that artists can still work in the medium of producing fantastic film posters which will be greatly appreciated and admired. I’ve bought a number of artprints over the last year or so and I really love buying them especially alternate film posters. I have to say in some cases the alternate artwork is even better than the originals. Expect more posts like this in the future.
