I have to say I am a massive fan of the Pirates of The Caribbean films. I love Gore Verbinski’s work on the first three films. They show real visual flair, great designs and attention to detail and are incredibly enjoyable with some great characters and fantastic set pieces. I know many people don’t enjoy the later two but I really do.
Rob Marshall’s Pirates of The Caribbean On Stranger Tides is seen as the weakest of the bunch but I really enjoy it aside the romance subplot which felt a little forced. Ian Mcshane and Penelope Cruz and Stephen Graham make great additional characters to the series as well. What I really love about the Pirate films though are Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow, Geoffrey Rush’s Captain Barbossa and Kevin McNally’s Mr Gibbs.
For the first three films NECA had the license to create 7″ figures from the films. Zizzle had the license for 3.75″ figures for Dead Man’s Chest and At Worlds End. For Stranger Tides Jakks Pacific had the license to create 4″ and 6″ figures.
Also involved with license were Hot Toys who made Jack Sparrow figures, Elizabeth Swan and Will Turner figures. You also had Mega Blocks and Lego creating products for the license as well. The Japanese companies tend to just focus on making figures of Jack Sparrow. Also not forgetting Disney have done their own line of 6″ Pirates of the Caribbean figures which look pretty sweet.
I have collected NECA’s Pirates line for the last few years and I need to get a Elizabeth, Will, Norrington, Bill, Captain Teague and the Isle De Muerta Cursed Barbossa and Jack Set which continues to elude me. I personally love NECA’s line of Pirate figures as they are so well detailed and look great on the shelf and their limited articulation doesn’t bother me in the slightest. They released loads of characters which was incredible. Some characters other companies would never touch so I really appreciate what they did with license and it’s among my favourite lines.
I heard about Jakk’s Pacific line a few years after the line came out and I was a little disappointed as they were a different scale and they weren’t as detailed as NECA’s line. They did do Gibbs though which NECA sadly didn’t do. Tis a pity NECA no longer had the license as I would of loved figures of Gibbs, Angelica and McShane’s Blackbeard.
Now for Dead Men Tell No Tales, Spin Master have the license for very kid friendly line and Diamond Select Toys have the license for 7″ Select figures and Minimates figures along with Vinimates (vinyl versions of Minimates) I’ll be getting the Minimates figures and the Select Figures. So far we know we are getting Jack Sparrow and Barbossa in Series 1. I suspect in Series 2 we’ll be getting Salizar as DST have stated they’ll be doing a figure of him. I’m not sure who else they have planned or if they plan to go beyond a second series.
I would love for them to keep going with the line like they have with the Ghostbusters so that we could have a Black Pearl deck. I would love that to happen with figures of characters from this film and previous films. It certainly warrants it. I would definitely get the first series to support sales so they can release more.
It’s great that there’s still interest in the license as I really enjoy the films and I love to have most of the characters immortalized on my shelf.
