Undoubtedly Hasbro’s biggest collector line is the Marvel Legends. Now with Disney’s MCU ever expanding Hasbro have been doing lines of MCU figures mixing them with comic book versions of other characters.
Last year Hasbro released Scarlet Witch from the MCU from Captain America Civil War with a pretty great likeness to Elizabeth Olsen. At SDCC last year they revealed a Netflix Jessica Jones figure with a very strong likeness to Krysten Ritter and a Netflix Punisher figure with a great likeness to Jon Bernthal.
The Guardians of The Galaxy Vol 2 figures have just been released in the Stateside (hopefully making their way to the UK soon) and I have seen pictures and I have to say the likeness to Chris Pratt (Star Lord) and Michael Rooker (Yondu) are very strong.
The MCU figures prove that Hasbro can compete with the big boys like NECA when it comes to capturing a actor’s likeness. When the figures have the actors likeness it makes it more authentic in representing the character from the film. Hasbro have carried this over to their Black Series line with mixed results.
The unmasked Kylo Ren looks very much like Adam Driver in my opinion and Ben Obi-Wan Kenobi looks exactly like Sir Alec Guinness and Director Orson Krennic looks uncannily like Ben Mendelsohn. To get the likeness to an actor at such a small scale is an incredible feat in my opinion. Sometimes Hasbro have these fantastic moments when they get the likeness down pat and for a reasonable price.
I know a bane of many collectors is a sloppy paint job when it comes to applying paint to head sculpts as it can sometimes ruin the head sculpt beneath it. A number of my Black Series figures suffer this. One area where Hasbro don’t fail in the paint is the paint application to the hair on their figures. Depending on the character and costume they add a dry brushing sort of effect to the hair which makes it look far more detailed and I have to admit I love that effect.
I have to admit I have really grown to appreciate Hasbro more as a company and have become a bigger fan of them and their lines and after the reveals this weekend at NYTF 2017 I’m an even bigger fan.
