I haven’t seen all that many Technicolor films but I do absolutely love them. They look absolutely visually stunning. Then again a lot of the colour films that I have seen from the 40’s to the 60’s looked stunning. Though I am aware that Technicolor was invented before then. I think why I really appreciate it is because films are made so differently now, if you were to compare films made today to that of a film 50,60 or 70 years ago they look completely different today.
Nowdays despite the quality of films, some of them look really dull visually in their color schemes. I know for some films it’s to give a grounded tone and for some films it suits the look very well. But personally I like my films to be very colorful. That’s why I find Technicolor films a real feast for the visual senses. They look outstanding. Unfortunately Technicolor was a very expensive technique to use in film making so around the mid 70’s the studios sold the technology to China. Still some Technicolor films were made but they are a rarity 🙂
I really love the look of Technicolor films they look incredibly beautiful and really give the film a dreamlike quality which I really like, it’s pure escapism. Recently Eureka announced that they’ll be releasing Cover Girl which stars Rita Hayworth and Gene Kelly and I saw the trailer that Eureka released and I was in awe it looked fantastic. I was blown away by the color, I don’t usually watch musicals but I would love to watch Cover Girl.
You still some homages to the Technicolor film days with the likes of Hail Ceasar by the Coen Brothers which is a love letter to cinema of the 1950’s and it’s very much worth seeing for it’s visual style alone. If you haven’t seen a Technicolor film I highly recommend that you do.
