Time Bandits – I have to say I’m really having a hard time digesting the fact that I have only now seen the film this year. It’s an incredible kids film I have never seen anything like it. It’s simply incredible with a highly creative. It has some fantastic actors too and Evil is one of my all time favourite villains. I honestly have to say it’s my favourite Terry Gilliam film that I have seen.

Top Secret – This is an incredibly funny film by the team that made Airplane. It’s a spoof of WWII spy films and it’s absolutely hilarious. I have to say I find it even funnier than Airplane. If you haven’t seen Top Secret I would highly recommend watching it as soon as possible

Monty Python and The Holy Grail – Only earlier this year did I get round to watching some Monty Python (which is completely my cup of tea) and the famous films Life of Brian and The Holy Grail, I would have to say The Holy Grail is the much funnier film in my opinion. If you don’t know The Holy Grail is a retelling of the Knights of The Round Table story and them searching for The Holy Grail. I love it’s absurdity and most of, if not all of the jokes land. There’s so many memorable scenes and the characters are very memorable.

Invasion of The Body Snatchers (1978) – I have seen the original film and I have to say I really enjoy it and I have to say I really like the remake as well it’s a fantastic film and it holds up very well. I have to say to an extent i prefer the remake over the original.

Kingdom of Heaven (Directors Cut) – I have seen the theatrical release of Kingdom of Heaven some years ago on my PSP and I wasn’t that really impressed with it. I had heard that the Directors Cut is a much better film and I have to agree it really does. It makes it a far more coherent film than the Theatrical Cut and there’s payoff to the subplots and the scope is much better, it truly feels like an epic film and a underrated masterpiece.

Lawrence of Arabia – Another film that I finally got to round to watching this year and it was incredible. I saw it on Blu-Ray and it looked stunning and the central performance by Peter O’Toole is simply incredible. It’s a truly epic film about a true one off man T.E Lawrence, a man the likes we’ll never see the likes of again. One of David Lean’s greatest films.

The People Under The Stairs – I have only seen Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream so I haven’t seen that many films of Wes Craven. I didn’t know much about this one going into it, but I found it a ton of fun. It’s a dark comedy horror films which I really do love.

Network – I don’t think there’s been a better scathing satire on the media than Network. It’s a fantastic film with some truly wonderful performances from Faye Dunaway, Ned Beatty and Peter Finch who steals the show as the prophet of the television Howard Beale. I haven’t seen many of Sidney Lumet’s films but I know this is one of his finest and it is still very much relevant today

Pumpkinhead – You would think with a title like Pumpkinhead would be a b-movie. In fact it’s far from it. It’s a great little southern horror creature feature movie with a terrific heartfelt tragic story and a outstanding central performance from Lance Henriksen as Ed Harley. I absolutely adore this film and if you haven’t seen it I would highly recommend it.

The Producers – Earlier this year we lost Gene Wilder, one of the greatest comedic actors of all time. Shortly after his death I got round to watch two of his classic films that I missed out on previously Blazing Saddles and The Producers. I find both films incredibly funny but I think that The Producers is the better film in my opinion. Though both films demonstrate Wilder’s incredible comedic talent.

Krampus – I think I have talked about this film enough in my Holiday Spirits article. I adore this film and is a holiday favourite and my favourite Christmas Horror-Comedy film.

Phantom of The Paradise – To date this is the earliest Brian De Palma film I’ve seen and it’s one of the most creative films I have seen. It mixes Phantom of The Opera, Dorian Gray and Faust. Paul Williams makes a fantastic villain in  Swan and the music in the film is incredible as well.

Cabaret – Very early this year I watched Bob Fosse’s Cabaret and what a fantastic film it is. I suppose many people still talk about the film fondly and I can see why it’s a great film focusing on a darker part of Germany’s history. Despite all the light moments in the film there’s some pretty chilling scenes. I can’t fault anything about this film.

Night And The City  – It’s a known fact that Jules Dassin and Noir go hand in hand. One of Dassin’s last American pictures and definitely one of his finest films. The war torn and industrial backdrop of London and it’s docks fit the story very well and Richard Windmark gives a great performance as the chancer Harry Fabian.

The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes – I’m quite a fan of Sherlock Holmes and I have to say in all honesty Robert Stephen’s portrayal of the iconic detective is my favourite. The plot is very good and great fun, but what I really love about film is Sherlock’s relationship with Dr Watson (Colin Blakely) and Gabrielle Valladon (Genevieve Page) also look out for Christopher Lee as Mycroft Holmes. A great film which doesn’t get the love it deserves.

Sleuth – I have not seen a two hander like Sleuth and I never will again. Starring two acting greats Lawrence Oliver and Michael Caine. Andrew Wyke (Oliver) invites his wife young lover Milo (Caine) to his home to engage in a battle of wits. It’s highly entertaining and the script is fantastic.

Ray Donovnan   The reason that I started watching this is because of Eddie Marsan’s role in the series as Ray’s brother Terry. Ray Donovan is a mish-mash of neo-noir and crime drama and it works splendidly. I don’t want to spoil the plot as it’s full of great twists and turns. I haven’t even finished the first series yet and it’s becoming one of my favourites. Liev Schreiber gives a great central performance as Hollywood Fixer Ray. Eddie Marsan gives a great performance as Terry, Ray’s brother who used to be a boxer and has Parkinson’s. Though it’s John Voight who steals the show as their father Mickey Donovan.

Penny Dreadful – Horror Drama is making a big comeback on TV for the last 8 years or so. With many of them being highlights. I have only watched a handful and this year I started watching Penny Dreadful which ended this year on it’s 3rd series. It’s a brilliant Victorian London Era set series based on legendary horror characters and some brand new ones. I have only seen the first series and it’s fantastic. It’s tense, thrilling and incredibly exciting series with some brilliant acting from Eva Green, Timothy Dalton, Harry Treadaway and Rory Kinnear as John Clair/ Frankenstein’s Monster.

Hannibal – I have to say this year I’ve become quite a fan of the character Hannibal Lector created by Thomas Harris. A character who is a sociopathic cannibalistic serial killer who blurs the line between protagonist and antagonist as he is appears to the audience as sympathetic character in Bryan Fuller’s Hannibal series. Mads Mikkelsen plays Hannibal perfectly. The series is very grotesque and gory in places so I wouldn’t recommend it to you if you have a weak stomach

Ash Vs Evil Dead – I think I’ve spoken quite a lot about this series but I can’t stop gushing about it. It’s a brilliant horror comedy series, one of which I never thought would ever happen. I can’t fault this show at all and if you haven’t watched it and like the sound of it I would highly recommend it.

Alan Wake – I know this is somewhat cheating as it’s a video game, though it’s episodic structure makes you think it’s a miniseries. Hands-down this is one of the best video games I have ever played. It’s a psychological horror thriller and it’s phenomenal. I love how it plays, the story, the game-world Bright Falls and all the references to different things such as horror novels, writers and films. I haven’t finished it yet but I bloody love it. I have waited so long to play it and it’s well worth You can get it on XBox 360 and PC.
