Of the big three most iconic slasher icons Freddy Krueger is my absolute favourite. Michael and Jason don’t cut the mustard for me. They are large imposing and threatening figures but they lack something; character and personality.
Michael and Jason are very proficient and successful screen killers they kill without hesitation and are incredibly brutal and has some very iconic kills. Michael is completely evil Jason has some form of moral code. They are both mute and a very large men so they don’t really express any emotion or enjoyment. Freddy is completely different.
A big part of this is Robert Englund’s performance as Freddy. I haven’t seen New Nightmare yet but I can honestly say that Robert Englund is a highlight of the films. Especially A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child and 6 The Final Nightmare they are not good at all,but I find the first four films to be absolutely brilliant. He’s also terrific fun in Freddy Vs Jason.
Englund has show the sadistic, vicious and threatening side of Krueger and the more playful, one-liner spewing brightly coloured killer with a great sense of (dark) humour. I love both facets of the character he’s brilliant. One thing that really helps is that Jason have had multiple actors beneath the masks, Kane Hodder played Jason for four films which left a big imprint on the character.
I know for a fact that Freddy wouldn’t be as iconic as he is it wasn’t for Englund he brought Wes Craven’s iconic creation to life. His body language, voice and facial expressions make Freddy what he is and makes the character even more enjoyable. I know some people don’t like the one-liner’s but I love them. I also feel that the sequels don’t feel like cash-ins as he looks to have so much fun in the role. I haven’t seen the reboot but I can see fan’s disdain for it as I’ve heard it lacks imagination and creativity.
Also his kills are far more creative than his counterparts because he attacks his victims in their dreams. The directors of the films went in really fun directions with those some of which are rather grotesque. The makeup changed throughout the series with the most iconic look from Dream Warriors then it stayed till Part 7 The New Nightmare where Freddy got a horrifying makeover ( I have to say the New Nightmare look is incredibly menacing) Though I do really like the Pizza-Face look from part 3 as well.
I’ve also got more Freddy merchandise compared to Jason and Michael ( I have no Halloween merch at all) I have a number of Freddy figures by NECA both in plastic and mego form. I have art-prints and I know I’ll get more merchandise soon. The Sideshow Dream Warriors Freddy and I have heard there’s a Mezco 1:12 in the works as well. I haven’t watched any of the Child’s Play films yet but Chucky seems to be the sort of villain I like. That’s not to discredit Jason and Michael they are great villains in their own right but my favourite mute horror villain (?) has to be Sam from the Trick R Treat film.
I think at the end of the day I love my villains to have a personality and a sense of fun, it just makes them more wicked in my opinion and that’s why Freddy is my absolute favourite.
